Hotel to display local art
A chance for local artists to display their work for sale is being offered by a Bradford on Avon hotel.
The Swan Hotel formally launched its new Gallery Room with a private viewing of work by international artist Melissa Wishart.
Her exhibition of more than 20 signed giclee print will run for the next two months.
Swan Hotel owner James Sullivan-Tailyour said: “We wanted to offer some space to local artists in a temporary gallery to showcase their work.
“We have called it The Gallery Room and will be displaying Melissa’s work until the end of August, as well as works by other local artists.
“The opportunities for local artists to show their work in Bradford on Avon are generally a little bit tight so we are pleased to be able to offer them some space in a new environment.
“Their work will be seen by our hotel guests and visitors so they will gain exposure to a wider range of clients.”
Miss Wishart said: “I think that it is wonderful that there is a new venue in the town willing to show the work of local artists.”
She primarily paints in oils although she also works in mixed media, encaustic wax and draws extensively in charcoal and graphite, the bedrock of painting.
Miss Wishart draws inspiration from the sea and also from the River Avon and the Kennet & Avon Canal in Bradford on Avon.
The Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition selected her work for their show at the Mall Galleries in London.
She has also sold her work internationally and has been represented by galleries in Bermuda and Marazion in Cornwall.
Currently, her work is being shown by the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath after being selected for the Bath Society of Artists’ annual exhibition.
She was invited to be Artist in Residence in Bermuda and Tuscany and earlier this year was Artist in Residence at The Hall in Bradford on Avon, the former home of bicycle manufacturer Alex Moulton. Her exhibition at the Swan Hotel is in addition to her annual show at the West Barn in November.
