AskBoA: Does anyone else own an electric vehicle and had a similar experience to myself at these spaces ?

I am writing with regards to the two electric vehicle charging spaces in the Station Approach car park.

As an owner of a recently purchased electric vehicle I have had cause to make use of these spaces provided by the council to CHARGE your vehicle free of charge. You are required to pay for parking in these spaces however the charging facility is free.

Over the last month I have seen four vehicles parked in the spaces two of which weren’t even electric  that are not charging their car. The sign does clearly state electric vehicle CHARGING spaces, however there is no small print on the sign to say you must be charging your vehicle to make use of the spaces.

I am guessing this is the reason that I have on two occasions been met with a torrent of abuse and been unable to charge my car. I am sure I am not being unreasonable to expect people that are in electric vehicles that don’t wish to charge their cars to park in the normal spaces and not abuse the spaces to park there just because they have an electric car.

I would welcome additional sinage to state that you need to be charging. At all of the other spaces I use in this and neighbouring councils it states that people will incur a fine if they abuse these spaces.

Does anyone else own an electric vehicle and had a similar experience to myself at these spaces ?

    • As a fellow EV driver I have seen non-EVs in these spaces. You get used to it as an EV driver! However, personally I would only park there if I needed to charge, as a courtesy to other EV drivers. Many of us will also leave a note on the dashboard with our mobile number in case someone else needs the charger urgently. So, maybe this is the place to point out that these spaces are our versions of petrol stations, and it really is important to keep them clear.
