Unofficial poll result

This was posted on Twitter by Gerald Milward-Oliver this evening. It’s not an official result announcement, of course, but it’s the first one we’ve seen.

We shall post official numbers as soon as we get them.

  1. annette seekings says:

The YES has it! Thank you to all Bradford on Avon electors who stood patiently in the queue to cast their vote, whichever viewpoint they had. At last a truly democratic process and result.
    Yes: 1,356(71%)
    No: 561 (29%)
The overall response rate among electors was 25%, an exceptionally high figure for a parish poll. Well done everyone!

  2. Although I am disappointed in the result, I would like to thank all those who made the effort to come out and vote (of whichever persuasion). It shows that we care about the town we live in.

Now we must resolve where to go next. We need a bridge!

  3. How depressing. I want to live in a vibrant, 21st century community and not a disneyland pastiche of a town. Remember our lovely old town bridge was once a modern structure too.

  4. Rob Kendrew says:

What a paradox. We have a superb exhibition at the West Barn celebrating the 90th birthday of Alex Moulton and his commitment to innovative design and forward thinking in engineering, yet we live in a town with a substantial and vocal group who are doing all they can to thwart a project which exemplifies such principles.

  5. annette seekings says:

So Jenny and Rob equate a time-expired cable-stay design with modern and forward thinking (young) people, a sweetly old fashioned viewpoint. Look around you; visit (electronically) some of the marvellous state-of-the-art bridges in this country and abroad using “modern” materials, such as GRP. Pre-rusted steel has far more disadvantages than advantages and needs a huge amount of upkeep – for which you and your grandchildren would be paying. Bradford deserves the best, a footbridge for the 22nd century, that is the aim of Bradford Bridge Concern.

  6. Will Anstey says:

It’s great to live in a town where people care so much about their surroundings and are keen to excercise their right to democracy.

As a supporter of the bridge design, I’m obviously disappointed with the outcome or the poll. However, it is great to see that most people identify the need for a new bridge. It is now time to harness the energy that the poll created and keep plans and designs moving forward. Since the Results of the poll, I have not heard about what the options are and how the project is going to be progressed.

  7. The bridge design, although modern, was, in my opinion, not appropriate for the given application.

I’d like to see harmony, not a sore thumb.

  8. In the light of all existing bridges in Bradford, I should like to see a review of the ‘real’ technical constraints within which the bridge must be designed. Surely, a beam bridge, with structural members hidden underneith, would be better than a not very original “sore thumb”!
