AskBoA: Any BoA Book / Poetry Groups?

I’m really keen to join a local book reading / poetry reading club . . . but the usual internet searches are turning up very little.

Simply wondering if anyone out there knows of anything happening/may be happening/going to happen in BOA . . .

Would be great to hear from you. Please leave a comment below.

    Hi Ian,

I have belatedly caught up with your interest in joining a book group in Bradford and wondered if you might still be looking? I belong to a group which started back in November 2001 in Bradford and currently has eleven members. We meet monthly on a Tuesday evening and take it in turns to choose a book, host the evening and lead off on the discussion. We have six women and five men in the group and try to keep a gender balance, but having recently lost one of the blokes it’s been hard to find another male who is interested in literature! I have to say that most of the members are around retirement age (one or two younger) but we do have some lively discussions over a glass or two. We have also had the occasional excursion, e.g. to the Guernsey Literary Festival and another one is planned for next October to St. Ives to follow in the footsteps of DH Lawrence.

Recently we have read ‘Our Man in Havana’, ‘Stoner’, ‘Zennor in Darkness’, and ‘To the River’ by Olivia Laing is our next choice. We try to have a mixture of contemporary and more established writers and some non-fiction mixed in with the novels. At Christmas we also have a poetry and prose evening where members bring along some of their favourite writing to share wit the group.

If this is of interest, do contact me to let me know. My phone number is 01225 722123.

    Cheers

    Malcolm Sykes
